Antimalarial prophylaxis

Look inside.
A vaccine against malaria is not yet available. Antimalarial prophylaxis implies the periodic assumption of specific drugs to suppress the infection, in case of plasmodium transmission through the bite of an infected mosquito. There is no 100% effective prophylaxis and any drug can give unpleasant side effects.
For this reason the choice of drug(s) to take for prophylaxis should be individualised, based on an accurate risk assessment taking into account country and region of destination, type and duration of travel and individual features, such as pre-existing diseases, predisposing conditions or particular risk factors.

Plasmodium falciparum.
Plasmodium vivax.
Malaria: geographical distribution.
Plasmodium ovale.
Plasmodium malariae.

This animation, which illustrates, in six short sequences, the various stages of the life-cycle of the malaria parasite in the human host and in its mosquito vector, has been conceived by Professors Christophe Rogier et Marcel Hommel.
