The Federation was founded in 1995 in Hamburg, during the first European Congress on Tropical Medicine. Fifteen European countries are currently represented on the Federation Council by their respective national societies. Overseas Societies are welcomed as corresponding members. The objectives of the Federation are to build upon the interdisciplinary expertise of the national societies in Europe, for developing European collaboration and North-South partnership towards health development in the tropics, in the respect of regional specificities. The Centre for Tropical Diseases (CTD) and the Service of Epidemiology and Laboratory for Tropical Diseases were established in 1989 by the "Fondazione don Giovanni Calabria per le Malattie Tropicali" at Sacro Cuore - Don Calabria Hospital, Negrar (Verona), Italy. Therefore in the year of the Congress the Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary. Despite its recent foundation, the Centre for Tropical Diseases has continuously developed and is now one of the most important Italian referral units for tropical diseases.

The SIMET is the Italian Society dealing with Tropical Medicine and International Health. It has about 300 members, both working in Italy and overseas in Tropical Medicine and related fields. Established in 1983, it is the successor of the four previous Societies founded with different names, the first one in 1908. The "tropical pathologies", the "diseases of warm climates", the "exotic diseases" were the disciplines cultivated by the Society's fellows in the past century.
